Podcast listening still on the rise

Despite assumptions that podcast listening had reached its peak during COVID lockdowns, the latest research indicates its popularity continues to grow.

Edison Research has released The Infinite Dial 2023 Australia – a survey into audio consumption among Australian listeners.

43% of Australians (that’s 9 million people) 12+ listen to podcasts at least once a month, while 33% listen weekly.

Around half of people between 18-39 years of age listen to podcasts on weekly basis. While one in three of those between 40-54 listen weekly.

11% of Australians listen to podcasts every single day.

The average weekly podcast listener consumes five episodes a week.

Most of the listening is done at home (87%), in the car (64%), while walking (54%), or on public transport (40%).

The car has finally embraced the digital revolution. Interestingly, 2023 was the first time ever that podcast consumption in the car beat listening to a CD. And you thought CDs were obsolete years ago!

Spotify (34%) is the most popular platform to listen to podcasts – Apple Podcasts (11%) continues to lose market share.
